KEYNOTE 3

Strategically Revamp Your CV to Stand Out and Fit In

Entering the job market in one’s 30s or later can present unique challenges, as navigating age caps and transitioning from a student to an expert. But what alternative career paths beyond academia should be considered? This keynote addresses these issues by offering insights into breaking through the 'glass wall' of academia. Drawing from the experience of a professional and personal revampt after a 5-year hiatus following the transition from the first job during postgraduate studies, this talk focuses is on crafting a CV that not only highlights personal interests but also aligns with the objectives of prospective institutions. The discussion will also emphasize the importance of seizing opportunities like attending fully-funded courses with a strong motivation letter, volunteering, and mentoring to shape a personal narrative that showcases one’s potential beyond publications and research alone. In addition, the talk will cover both the successes and setbacks faced along the way, offering insights into navigating several roles as early careers in research organizations, intergovernmental institutions, and academia. Lessons drawn from experiences in teacher training will provide valuable templates for those on similar career journeys.
